Merit Scholarships
We are proud to be able to offer academically talented and motivated students an opportunity to attend AFS through a competitive merit-based Honors Scholarship program for students entering grades 5 through 10.
Eligibility requirements to compete for an Honors Scholarship
Students entering AFS as new students in grades 5 through 11 are eligible to apply. Honors Scholarship recipients will be selected on the basis of multiple criteria. While an exemplary academic record is certainly important, so are strong recommendations from teachers, plus demonstrated passion for academic and non-academic activities outside the classroom. Assuming that an Honors Scholar continues to thrive in the AFS environment by fulfilling academic and extracurricular expectations and continues to demonstrate the qualities for which the award is given, the scholarship will be extended each year through graduation.
Award Amounts
An Honors Scholar recipient accepted into our Middle School (Grades 5-8) receives up to $20,000.
An Honors Scholar recipient accepted into our Upper School (Grades 9-11) receives up to $25,000.
Application Guidelines
Inquire. Call or email the Abington Friends School Admission Office to receive an admission application and introductory materials. You can also access our application online.
Visit our Campus. Campus visits provide families with a tour of the school, opportunities to meet faculty and students and an opportunity to talk at length with a member of the admission team. As an applicant, a student will shadow AFS student for a day. Parents are also welcome to tour classrooms and share insights about their child in a parent conversation with an admission representative.
Complete an application for admission. All application materials and visits must be submitted and completed by December 6 to be considered for a Merit Scholarship, so we recommend starting the admission process no later than early November.
Participate in Leadership Day. All students who are admitted to grades 5-11 at AFS for the fall are required to attend Leadership Day if they wish to be considered for an honors scholarship. This day includes seminar style classes as well as other collaborative activities. Candidates are invited to participate in Leadership Day to enthusiastically demonstrate strong engagement in a collaborative learning setting.
Consider the option to apply for need-based financial aid. Acceptance of an Honors Scholarship does not eliminate a family from consideration for need-based assistance. In addition, the amount of an awarded scholarship will not change in the event that need-based financial assistance is also awarded. Families from a broad range of incomes apply to AFS.
