The AFS Robotics program has grown by leaps and bounds over the last three years with students increasingly taking leadership roles in the design, coding and building of robots for competition. Now with its own dedicated space in Upper School, the robotics program develops students’ abilities to work in teams, bounce back from failure, solve problems creatively and design innovative solutions.
For the last four years AFS RooBotics has taken part in the FIRST Robotics Competition, an international high school robotics competition. Each January a new challenge is issued to all teams, along with a standardized kit of motors, parts and computer components. After six weeks of intense problem solving, prototyping, writing code and building, the teams face off in district and regional events.
In its first year of competition, our team scored the most points of any rookie team. Last year, they advanced all the way to the World Championships in St. Louis.
“I love coding because you can make anything you want. You have full creative force of your imagination to create anything. You’re just using a few numbers and letters but with them you can make amazing things and have such a huge impact.” – Anna Nicolais ‘17
