Summer Training Opportunities for AFS Athletes

Summer training opportunities for AFS student-athletes who are interested in beginning to prepare for the 2016-17 athletics season will kick into higher gear in July and August. Here is a comprehensive list of these training opportunities, most of which are for students entering 7th through 12th grades. Please reach out to the contact person listed with each session or to Jeff Bond, AFS Director of Athletics, with any questions. We hope to see you this summer.

Soccer — Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30 to 7 p.m., starting Wednesday, July 6. Former AFS Varsity Boys Soccer assistant coach Toby Abdul-Razaq will lead participants in skills development and pick-up games on the Varsity Field or Smith Field. Sessions are open to both boys’ and girls’ soccer team players. Jeff Bond will answer any questions about summer soccer.

Tennis — Thursdays, from 6 to 8 p.m., starting Thursday, June 30. AFS Varsity Girls’ Tennis and Varsity Boys’ Tennis head coach Cornell McLeod will provide instruction and drills to interested girls’ and boys’ tennis team players on the AFS tennis courts. Please contact Coach McLeod with questions.

Cross-Country — One evening a week, runners will meet to train with AFS Cross-Country and Track & Field head coach Kyle Rankin. Interested runners should contact Coach Rankin for more details.

Wrestling — Tuesday afternoons from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Cohen Family Wrestling Room in Triangle Gym. AFS Varsity Wrestling head coach Terry McGovern and AFS Middle School Wrestling coaches Justin Solonynka and David Robinson will lead light skills-development sessions for potential future wrestlers entering 5th through 12th grades. The option for weekend tournaments exists for more experienced wrestlers. Contact the coaches with questions.

Girls’ Basketball — Wednesday evenings from 5 to 6:45 p.m., starting July 6. AFS Varsity Girls’ Basketball coaches Jeff Bond and Angie Adams will hold skills training and pickup games in Hallowell Gym for any interested players entering 7th through 12th grades.

Swimming — Interested swimmers will be able to train in AFS’s outdoor pools on selected evenings during July and August. Details are still to be determined and will be shared soon.

In addition to these sport-specific training opportunities, AFS’s Thode Fitness Center is available for student use between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. from Mondays through Fridays.
