Third grade students gathered together in groups to celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival. The yearly festival, notably celebrated in Asia, brings families together to celebrate the harvest under a full moon. The holiday is all about giving thanks, for nature’s abundance and for joyful reunions with loved ones.
Third grade classes have been learning about the holiday and China, but last week they celebrated the holiday by creating lanterns for a large culminating festival to which their families will be invited later this fall. Willy ’29, a student in Jeanne Calloway’s class said, “The festival is at night and they use the lanterns to light up the rivers and cities.”
There many projects ahead as the students prepare to exhibit their learning to the community, including writing poetry, filming a documentary and several other creative projects. Third grade teacher Felix Chen said, “This helps students to think about and experience other cultures.”
