Dining Services FAQs

What are the dining service options for students at AFS?

Abington Friends School dining services are managed by CulinArt Inc., which strives to provide simple, healthy and kid-friendly food.

Upper and Middle school students are able to purchase a meal plan (which can be used to purchase meals in the Muller Café and the Farmhouse) and participate in a separate a la carte program (available exclusively in the Farmhouse). Lower School students in Grades 1-4 are able to take advantage of the meal plan program. Students in the 3-and 4-year olds program and kindergarten are expected to bring a lunch. There are currently no a la carte options for Lower School students.

WHAT IS A MEAL PLAN?

A meal plan allows students to purchase meals in increments of 25 up to 170. Each AFS complete meal includes one main course selection from New York Deli, Chef’s Choice (hot entrée), Pizza Villaggio, Salad Bar (large salad with toppings) or Pasta Villagio, accompanied by two side dish selections (soup, small salad, vegetable, rice, potatoes, fresh fruit, etc. ) with one dessert and one beverage.

WHERE CAN STUDENTS PURCHASE MEALS?

Meals are served to Lower School (grades 1-4 only), Middle School and Upper School students during their respective lunch times in the Muller Cafe. Upper and Middle School students can also purchase meals in the Farmhouse during their lunch periods.

WHERE CAN I FIND THE LUNCH MENU?

A link to the current menu can  be found on the parent and student sections of the AFS website.

CAN MY CHILD JUST BUY DESERT OR A DRINK?

Because we are trying to streamline the purchasing process so students have more time to enjoy eating a healthy lunch, there are no a la carte options in the Muller Café. Students must have meals “loaded” onto their ID cards via the enrollment process described in this section of the website in order to go through the cafeteria line. A meal will be clearly described and a student may select all or some of the components that make up a “meal.” When they scan their ID card, one meal will be deducted from their account balance.

Middle and Upper School students are able to purchase healthy a la carte snack and beverage choices in the Farmhouse with cash or with a “Farmhouse Flex” debit account.

HOW DO I SIGN MY STUDENT UP FOR A MEAL PLAN?

Sign up for the Student Meal Plan by returning your completed Meal Plan Enrollment Form to CulinArt at Abington Friends School. Include credit card information or enclose a check payable to CulinArt Inc. at Abington Friends School. Mail to Abington Friends School, ATTN: CulinArt Dining Services, 575 Washington Lane, Jenkintown, PA 19046.

CAN I SIGN UP FOR A MEAL PLAN MID-YEAR?

Yes, the Meal Plan is open enrollment. You must complete an enrollment brochure (insert link here) and include credit card information or a check (made payable to Culinart, Inc.) and mail to AFS, 575 Washington Lane, Jenkintown, PA 19046.

CAN I PAY FOR MY CHILD’S FULL-YEAR MEAL PLAN IN MORE THAN ONE INSTALLMENT?

We have provided several tiers of plans. In addition, if you start by purchasing a half-year plan, but decide later to sign up for a full year plan, you will receive full credit for the cost of the limited plan toward your upgrade to the full plan. In other words, if you buy a half-year Upper School plan for your child at a cost of $425 then choose to trade up to a full year plan, you will pay an additional $370 rather than the full $425 cost of a second half-year plan.

IF MY CHILD DOES NOT USE ALL OF HIS OR HER MEALS BY THE END OF THE YEAR, WILL THEY CARRY OVER TO THE NEXT SCHOOL YEAR?

No, meal plans are sold on a use-it-or-lose-it basis. Your child’s meal-plan balance will be reset to zero at the end of every school year.

WHAT IS THE FARMHOUSE?

The Farmhouse is a stand-alone building outside the Middle and Upper School. CulinArt sells food and snacks in the AFS Farmhouse daily from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to Middle and Upper School students when school is in session. Menu items include freshly made deli sandwiches, salads and soups as well as nutritious snacks and drinks. Payment options include cash, “Farmhouse Flex” debit accounts and meal plans.

CAN LOWER SCHOOL STUDENTS BUY FOOD AT THE FARMHOUSE?

The Farmhouse is open only to Upper and Middle School students. There are currently no a la carte options for Lower School students.

WHAT KINDS OF SNACK AND A LA CARTE ITEMS ARE AVAILABLE IN THE FARMHOUSE?

Students will have access to a wide selection of healthy snacks, including hummus, fresh fruit, yogurt and veggies as well as Naked Juices, Gatorade, Silk and Tropicana juices. In addition, a limited number of breakfast items will be available, including oatmeal, bagels and cold cereal and local, hormone-free milk. We have tried to design the Farmhouse menu to be healthy while keeping an eye on the “yummy!”

CAN MY CHILD USE HIS OR HER MEAL PLAN ACCOUNT TO PURCHASE LUNCH IN THE FARMHOUSE?

Yes, meal plans (for Upper and Middle School students) may be used in the Farmhouse, which serves a limited menu including fresh deli sandwiches (many of which can be toasted), soups, salads and dessert. As always, a meal includes either one deli selection or salad accompanied by two side selections (soup, small salad, fresh fruit, etc) with one dessert (2 cookies, 1 pudding, etc) and one beverage (as indicated from the meal plan). Meal plans may only be purchased using a paper registration form (available in the Dining Services section of the AFS website).

IS THERE A DEBIT-ACCOUNT OPTION FOR PURCHASING LUNCH OR A LA CARTE ITEMS IN THE FARMHOUSE?

Students are be able to purchase lunch or a la carte items using cash or “Farmhouse Flex” debit accounts. Flex accounts can be set up online at http://www.mypaymentsplus.com.

HOW DO I PUT MORE MONEY ON MY STUDENTS FARMHOUSE FLEX ACCOUNT? CAN I DO THIS AT ANY TIME?

You can put money on your child’s Farmhouse Flex debit account at any time online through the My Payments Plus website.

WHAT HAPPENS TO THE MONEY LEFT ON MY CHILD’S AFS FARMHOUSE DEBIT CARD ACCOUNT AT THE END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR?

Farmhouse Flex balances will carry over from one year to the next.

WHAT IF MY STUDENT LOSES THEIR ID CARD?

If your student loses his or her ID card, AFS can issue a blank replacement card with the student’s barcode and without a photo for use in the cafeteria at no charge. Requests for a replacement cards should be made to Martha Scache in the business office. Students will not be denied lunch because they are unable to locate their ID cards.

Replacement photo IDs can be ordered directly from Jontori Photography Studios at 215-491-2919. Jontori charges a $10 fee. AFS does not require students to replace their photo IDs.
